Grape varieties

Over 2,000 years of viticulture have endowed Catalunya with a wide range of indigenous or traditional Catalan varieties. These, together with varieties originating from other grape growing regions which have acclimatised perfectly to Catalunya's soil and micro-climate, have ensured that wines of truly excellent organoleptic qualities are produced under the Catalunya Designation of Origin.

Two groups of grape varieties have been designated for winemaking and ageing under the Catalunya Designation of Origin: recommended, i.e. those of demonstrable quality which the Board is keen to promote, and authorised, varieties which are also safeguarded by the Designation of Origin in view of the quality of their wines.

The following white grapes from the recommended varieties are worth highlighting:

- The Macabeu or Viura, the Xarel·lo - also known as Cartoixà or Pansal or Pansa Blanca - and the Parellada or Montonenc or Montònega are all indigenous Catalan varieties and predominant in the Catalunya Designation of Origin. The resulting wines are refined, with an abundance of fruit, slightly acidic and with a moderate alcohol content of 10 to 12 % vol. These wines are young, light and very fruity.

- Garnatxa blanca is another variety predominant in Catalunya, mainly in the northern and southern regions, with more body and strength that those mentioned above, resulting in white wines with a higher alcohol content of 12 to 13% vol. These varieties are intended for ageing as well as for making the traditional Catalan fortified wines such as vi ranci (mellow wine), mistela (meads) and dessert wines.

- Chardonnay, a foreign grape variety which has acclimatised perfectly to Catalunya, is now cultivated over a substantial number of hectares. An early variety, with a good alcohol content of around 12% vol., it endows Catalan wines with the characteristic Chardonnay aroma and bouquet. It is also often used for wines intended for ageing within this Designation of Origin.

- Moscatell d'Alexandria, also known locally as small-berry muscatel, is another of the varieties which has most easily acclimatised to Catalunya. It has a moderate alcohol content and is used for making still, semi-sec wines which it endows with the aroma and bouquet so characteristic of muscat grapes.

- The other white varieties, both recommended (Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc) and authorised (Gewürztraminer, Malvasia or Subirat Parent, Malvasia de Sitges, Pedro Ximénez and Picapoll) are not so widely cultivated in Catalunya, which does not in any way imply that they do not produce high quality wines.

From the recommended red grape varieties, the following are worth highlighting:

- Ull de Llebre, Samsó or Crusilló or Mazuela, Garnatxa negra or Lladoner and Peluda, and Monastrell or Morastell or Garrut are predominant among the indigenous or traditional Catalan varieties and are cultivated throughout the whole Catalunya Designation of Origin production area. These are varieties with an intense colour, a high polyphenol content and a considerable dry extract which makes them ideal for ageing in oak casks, very much in line with current demand, and a high alcohol content of 12 to13% vol. Powerful in both body and colour, these wines have a characteristically clear and concentrated aroma, well-balanced and with a lingering aftertaste. These grape varieties are also used to make rosé wines and young reds under the Catalunya Designation of Origin.

- Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir are all foreign varieties that have acclimatised perfectly to Catalunya, possessing a high intensity of colour and polyphenol content which, combined with their acidity and dry extract, also makes them very appropriate for ageing in oak casks, a prerequisite for these kinds of wines. With a high alcohol content of 12 to 13% vol., these wines are also very powerful in both colour and body, rounded in the mouth, with a lingering aftertaste and the characteristic aromas of ripe fruits.

- Among the other red grape varieties falling within the authorised group (Garnatxa Tintorera and Syrah), we should highlight the planting over recent years of the Syrah variety, another foreign grape variety which has acclimatised perfectly to the Catalunya Designation of Origin area of production, and which produces wines of an exceptionally intense colour which, taken together with the other qualitative parameters of body, aroma and taste intensity, allows us to predict that in the future this will become one of the predominant varieties within this Designation of Origin.
